In this story, O. Henry makes an allusion to the Magi. According to the Christian tradition, the Magi were three wise men or kings named Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar.They traveled east to Bethlehem, guided by a miraculous star, to present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrth to the infant Jesus.These gifts were prized possesions, having not only nonetary but medicinal and ceremonial value. They are sometimes thought of as the first Christmas presents.
